Congratulations to the Arnerich Massena Hood to Coast team, Firm Assets! They completed the grueling two-day, 201-mile relay race from Mount Hood’s Timberline Lodge (at 6,000 feet on the southern flank of the mountain) to the Oregon coast, reaching the finish line with a time of 29 hours, 26 minutes, and 17 seconds. We finished 31st of 131 mixed corporate teams and 356th out of 1,050 teams overall! Not only did they reach the finish line, but the team also raised more than $2,000 for the Cole Parker Randall Foundation, in honor of Jeff Van Damme, Kristi Van Damme’s husband, and Don Mirich, Peg Terry’s partner. Irvington School is hosting its first-ever school supply drive on August 25, 2017 to alleviate school supply costs for Irvington families and classroom teachers. Local businesses donated supplies and funding for the event, organized by Kamelah Adams and Bryan Steelman along with the Irvington PTA and principal Satrina Chargualaf. The supply drive is part of an overall effort to send a message of greater inclusion, community, and belonging among all members of the Irvington School Community.
The I AM Learning Partnership is an important part of that community, and we supported the drive with our own unique donations. Read more
Thank you to everyone who has helped us reach FAR for Health in our Hood to Coast fundraiser! We’ve raised more than $1,700 so far for the Cole Parker Randall Foundation.
Arnerich Massena’s Hood to Coast team, Firm Assets, will be putting on their running shoes this Friday for the epic relay race. This year, we are dedicating the race to two of our families who have experienced tragedies over the last six months. In honor of Jeff Van Damme, Kristi Van Damme’s husband, and Don Mirich, Peg Terry’s partner, our team, Firm Assets, is raising money to support the Cole Parker Randall Foundation, which supports families with children facing difficult medical challenges and contributes to ongoing research in pursuit of a cure for spinal muscular atrophy. The camp was provided at no cost to participating families, and served about 20 children in total. Read more
On the picture-perfect afternoon of August 12th, sunny and warm but thankfully not too hot, the Arnerich Massena polo team won the championship match versus their worthy opponents Do503. Tony Arnerich had the honor of delivering the trophy on the field amid the players and horses. The dresses were colorful, the hats even more so, and everyone turned out in style. Guests enjoyed the matches, a divot stomp, food, and wine, all culminating with live performances from Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers and Redray Frazier. And the Arnerich Massena tent enjoyed a surprise visit from Portland Trail Blazer Damian Lillard! Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Arnerich Massena tent to make it the event of the summer! At Arnerich Massena, we are proud that we have always been ahead of the curve on this issue, acknowledging fiduciary status since our inception and offering independent, unbiased advice to retirement plans. Regardless of the outcome of the rule’s delay, we will continue to acknowledge our fiduciary status and work in the best interest of Arnerich Massena clients and clients’ retirement plan participants.
The Department of Labor’s (DOL) fiduciary rule has met with several delays since it was finalized in 2016. While some of its basic provisions went into effect on June 9, 2017, the remainder looks like it may be delayed once again. On August 9, the DOL gave notice that it submitted a proposed extension for review. The proposal requests an 18-month extension of the applicability dates for several aspects of the regulation, including the core portions of the best interest contract exemption and prohibited transaction exemption. Without a crystal ball (or time machine, fairy godmother, or other magical trick) to predict market movements, even the smartest market timer is likely to miss some of the market’s best days. Just missing the ten best days between 1997 and 2017 would cut your return nearly in half over that time. What’s the moral of this chart? Keep your focus on a long-term investment strategy designed for your risk and return objectives, and stick with it. Read more
Like a lot of Portlanders, I’ve recently spent a bit of money on fans and a portable air conditioning unit. Whether the hot streak is attributable to man-made climate change or merely to seasonal temperature spikes, the result is the same: sweaty days and uncomfortable nights.
