Arnerich Massena senior research analysts Bryan Shipley, CFA, and RJ Wamsley recently returned from the other side of the globe, where they spent the second half of September conducting due diligence. They met with numerous fund managers in Singapore and Hong Kong, and attended the Super Return Asia Conference, the largest private equity conference for Asian private equity.
The two encountered severe heat and humidity and a street race — the F-1 Race — that shut down the streets of Singapore for a couple of days. RJ noted that “It was hotter in Singapore at 6:30 a.m. than Florida in June at 3:00 p.m.!” They described the cities as being not unlike other urban environments, but hotter and with more meat hanging in outdoor markets. Bryan expressed his amazement that very modern high-rise buildings were being constructed, but using bamboo scaffolding. Below are a few pictures of their adventures.
Arnerich Massena has been investing in Asian private markets since 2007, much to the benefit of our clients. This visit to Asia was to meet with our managers to conduct standard due diligence, and also to help gauge the macroeconomic environment in Asian countries, and the micro landscape as well. Bryan and RJ agreed that Asia is currently undergoing significant transitions, with new leadership in India and China’s attempts to boost their economy. Both analysts see this as a period of opportunity and are excited about the potential that Asian equity and private equity offer.
