The women of Arnerich Massena have an annual holiday tradition of gathering together to volunteer with a local charity and then enjoying a white elephant exchange over lunch. This year, the group visited the Children’s Book Bank, many for the first time.
The Children’s Book Bank fills homes and lives with engaging, culturally diverse books because “all children deserve to have books of their own.” The organization notes that in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to children is one book for every 300 children! The Arnerich Massena women worked to clean and prep donated books to go in packets that will be delivered to children in these underserved neighborhoods. It was a fulfilling and enlightening experience, and in the process, we shared some of our favorite childhood books, such as Goodnight, Moon; Princess Alicia; My Monster Mama Loves Me So; Cars and Trucks and Things that Go; and EE Cummings’ Fairy Tales.
Following the volunteer activity, some crazy white elephant gifts were exchanged, including a decorative Elvis lamp, a light-up Rudolph nose, and mummy salad tongs. Enjoy the photos below.
