Attendees of this week’s Learn Share Connect event are now better able to find their way through the fiduciary maze, thanks to informative and helpful presentations from a variety of experts. The event, hosted at Portland hotel The Nines, was well-attended, with a full room for the two panel presentations.
A discussion of fiduciary best practices, moderated by Arnerich Massena’s Scott Dunbar, led the event. We heard from Gay Lynn Bath, who manages the Oregon Savings Growth Plan’s Deferred Compensation program; from Lorne Dauenhauer, a partner with law firm Lane Powell; from Erik Bjorvik, a committee member of M Financial’s 401(k) plan; and from Jake O’Shaughnessy, an Arnerich Massena advisor. Different perspectives helped to shed light on topics like creating a committee charter, documenting and following fiduciary processes, and investment selection and monitoring.
The second presentation, Operational Best Practices: Looking Ahead, gave a forward-looking view of fiduciary topics, moderated by Arnerich Massena’s Allison Grebe Lee. What will the legislative and regulatory landscape look like as we move into the future? This was the question answered by Doug Fisher, senior vice president of Policy Development and Thought Leadership at Fidelity Investments, and Debby Deering, partner at accounting firm Moss Adams. Both panelists shared a wealth of information, and agreed that defined contribution plans are on the cusp of a new evolutionary stage. An improved fiduciary responsibility model in the future will shift away from plan construction based on fear of liability to an increased focus on improving participant outcomes.
Thank you to all those who made Finding Your Way Through the Fiduciary Maze a success, including presenters, organizers, and attendees. We look forward to hosting our next Learn Share Connect event!
