Sunday, April 12 marked the exciting groundbreaking celebration of OMSI’s new Outdoors Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray. The project is a legacy of John Gray, who began the development of this 20-acre science camp and living laboratory in Newport, Oregon. Now, with Tony Arnerich co-chairing the project, it has raised $9.7 million of the $10 million total needed, and construction is slated to be completed in the spring of 2016.
The OMSI Outdoors Coastal Discovery Center will serve 100,000 children and families over the next 20 years, hosting year-round residential camps taught by professional educators. The facility is designed to help prepare students to participate in science and technology-based industries, building and inspiring a pipeline of innovative workers. Students will study marine biology, ecology, and ocean observation in the rich environment of the Oregon Coast.
As a member of the campaign committee, I was honored to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. Below you will find a few photos of the event.
