Welcoming Bill Woodruff to the Arnerich Massena Team

We are pleased to welcome Bill Woodruff, our newest senior research analyst. Bringing more than 15 years of experience in the investment industry, largely focused on alternative investments, Bill will be responsible for research and due diligence on alternatives, including hedge funds and private equity. Our tradition requires that we ask new Arnerich Massena team members to share a bit about themselves:

What is your favorite restaurant in Portland?

La Provence: their breakfasts are especially terrific. Try their omelets with a sweet potato side dish.

What’s your favorite book?

I’ve read Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and the Markets by Nassim Taleb a few times. It’s a great book for getting my mind in the right place.

What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had?

In high school and a bit in college, I worked on golf courses, mainly doing cart maintenance and ball collection. It was a great job for me; I got to play a lot of golf!

Where is your favorite place to which you’ve traveled?

Italy. I went with my wife four years after we were married, before having children, and we traveled around for 15 days. We didn’t visit much of Southern Italy, but went to Rome, Venice, Milan, and Cinque Terre. One of the best things about it was seeing how different each place was, though in a relatively small geographical area.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

We may be planning a trip to Scotland this fall, which would be perfect – golf!

What’s your favorite memory?

I taught my oldest son to swim when he was three. He had a fear of the water, so he and I went out, just the two of us over a few months, and got him swimming confidently. I love watching my kids learn new things in general; it is incredibly rewarding.

If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?

I think of the character in the film Limitless, who had near-infinite intelligence – that would be the superpower I would want.
